In 1998 I created a series of spiral paintings. I placed sixteen canvases side by side in a squarish rectangular shape. Then I painted spirals across the canvases. Later I splattered paint on top of the lines. It also rained on the canvases. I went back and painted more spirals and again I splattered paint.

After all that I added a glaze of a single color over each canvas. To finish, I emphasized the lightest and darkest areas with white and neutrals respectively.

The pieces were completed for a group show. I chose titles from the Atlantic storm names list for the 1998 season. The day Hurricane Georges hit was the day of the reception. The show was taken down for safety reasons – the lobby has large glass windows. We had to go down and rehang the show. A reception was held a week later.

If the pieces were placed side by side, they would fit together like a
giant puzzle.

At this point in 1992, I wanted to go back to basic colors of lemon yellow, magenta and turquoise. I glazed the colors over one another in a spiral. My goal was for a simpler painting in which I just built up my colors.

A gaslight is a typical light fixture found in the French Quarter and other historical spots in the city of New Orleans. To add some mystery I glazed some fog-like layers over my image to create mystery.

New Orleans is also known as "The Crescent City." It has to do with the way the Mississippi River curves around the city. Therefore I decided to play with the shape of a crescent.

In this painting I referred to a map of New Orleans and adjacent areas to paint land and water. Again, I used white paint to destroy my shapes. Next I painted back into the shapes created by the destruction.

My title tells you it's a mask. I simply painted the shapes and then destroyed them with white paint. It gives the image a smoky look.

Following the trumpet, I painted my version of New Orleans drink served at Pat O'Brien's, The Hurricane. I figured this would be an appropriate painting to feature given that August is an active month for hurricanes.

In several of the art studio courses I took at Mississippi State, I was encouraged to render an image, destroy it and then work back into it. That’s just what I did here. Only this time I decided to explore imagery that was typical of New Orleans culture, jazz. It so happened I was working on a flyer for jazz musician about this time. It included a trumpet.

City Lights

Driving around on a rainy night, I was fixated with stop lights as
seen through a rain droplets on my windshield. This painting was my attempt to depict what I saw. I used stencils and then let drops of paints go where they wanted on top. I then accented the lightest and darkest areas. I include the photo below to give a sense of what I saw.

This abstract painting involved pouring paint. The different paint densities contributed to the image. My instructor suggested making some parts of the painting 3-D. It was the first time I used modeling paste.

Ink Blot

This began as an idea for an art show poster. It was to be a background design that captured the way I paint. Unfortunately the ink stuck in the screen. However, I used the transparency, created for silkscreen, for other projects. Eventually, the ink blot became the logo for my business cards.

Two Action Painting Studies

Since there were no official courses beyond Painting II at Mississippi State, it was up to a student to contract a teacher to teach a “one-on-one” course. I did several of these. They excited me because they were more individualized and I usually did well with a final grade. First a course outline had to be proposed by the student and accepted by the professor. Invariably each art professor changed the course of the class after the first project. Instead of cramming in a bunch of new techniqueshttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif I was interested in, the art professor pushed me to continue with images begun in the first piece.

These two studies were created in a contract course that involved abstract painting. The art professor often worked surreally developing imagery from abstract shapes from “happy accidents.” He also enjoyed creating collages. The two pieces below were made prior to Swirl in Paint.

I painted this painting 20 years ago. The assignment for this piece was to create an abstract painting on ungessoed canvas. I glazed colors over one another as I developed this piece. As I worked across the piece I implied faces in the details. My instructor had me include a figure. Some people have asked if the figure was male or female. I decided to leave that ambiguous.

This piece is not typical for me. Since it's Halloween, I figured I'll start this blog with this one. What I learned during this process influenced my later works.
